WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR BROOM MAKING?

  • Broom making is a physical activity and is best done wearing comfortable walking shoes. The most important things to avoid are open-toed shoes, platform heels, and flip-flops.

 WHAT EXACTLY IS BROOM CORN?

  • Usually referred to as broomcorn, the official name for this gluten-free grain is Sorghum. This crop originated in Africa but is now cultivated worldwide primarily as feed for livestock but luckily for us, it is also a fantastic material for making brooms!

CAN I BRING MY OWN BROOM ACCESSORIES?

  • No, please do not bring your own accessories for broom making (we don't want other customers to be jealous of the cool things you've brought!). Please inquire about extra twine at the end of your workshop, we will be happy to provide you with some so that you can add on any other accessories you have in mind when you get home.

HOW DO I GET MY BROOM HOME?

  • If you are traveling by plane and don't have room in your luggage, it is best to contact your airline before flying to ask if they will allow you to carry your broom on the plane. Alternatively, if you would like to ship your broom, the UPS store here in Salem has boxes specifically sized for our brooms. Please check the UPS store website for their hours and plan accordingly (closed Sundays).

CAN WE MAKE A WEDDING BROOM TOGETHER?

  • No. As mentioned in the general FAQs below, each person in a broom making workshop must be working on their own craft. However, you are welcome to come by for a kit-to-go!

General FAQs

Everyone participating in a workshop must agree and adhere to our Workshop Policies

The check in time for your workshop begins 15 minutes prior to the start time of the class. Please plan to arrive during this 15 minute check in window to allow enough time to select materials before the instruction begins. If you are not present and checked in by the start time of the workshop we cannot guarantee late entry. If this occurs we will be happy to help you reschedule to an available workshop time or we can put your initial payment towards a kit-to-go.

Our daily workshops are immersive crafting sessions-  we make brooms, books, and spelljars! Some folks come to make witches brooms and spell books, others come to make crafts for decoration.  All are welcome! In our daily workshops, we do not incorporate history lessons, have people dressed as witches, or do spells. (We do have other events for that, however, so keep your eyes peeled on our events page for more information about upcoming events!).

If the calendar is blank for a specific workshop this means that the workshops at that time are completely sold out; there are a few ways to move forward from there.

  1. Get a kit-to-go: If you can't get a spot in one of our workshops you can always get a kit-to-go in our retail space or our online store. Kits-to-go are available WHILE SUPPLIES LAST. (OCTOBER: Retail hours may be subject to change, please check the front page of the website for any updates on when the store will be open for kit-to-go purchases)
  2. Reserve a private workshop: If you are coming with a larger group and are having trouble finding a workshop with enough open seat for your entire party we can help you find a time to schedule a private crafting workshop. Fill out our Private Workshop Inquiry form to begin this process.
  3. Continue checking availability: There is a chance that people will cancel reservations before their workshop. If this is the case, those workshop spots will become open again for another customer to book, however, there is no guarantee that this will happen.

An initial payment is required to hold spots for all broom making, bookbinding, and spelljar workshops at The Witchery. This initial payment is equal to the cost for the size of craft you would like to make during the workshop. You will have the option at the start of the workshop to upgrade to a larger size. This means that if you are unsure what size you want to make, you may pay for a small and decide on the size when you are here for your workshop. Please check out the broom making and bookbinding specific FAQs above for additional information on pricing for these workshops.

There is free 2 hour parking around Pickering Wharf but space it limited, especially in October. Metered parking and parking garages are available elsewhere around downtown Salem which you can find more information about on the City of Salem Website. (The staff of The Witchery is not responsible for knowing about parking options or availability and will not have this information on hand)

You can reschedule your workshop reservations through the confirmation email you initially received upon booking your spots for the workshop. YOU MUST RESCHEDULE EACH AND EVERY WORKSHOP APPOINTMENT INDIVIDUALLY. We may not be able to accommodate your group if your appointments are erroneously scheduled. (If you need to reschedule 4 workshop reservations you must reschedule 4 separate times).

You can receive a full refund for the Initial payments you've paid if you cancel your reservation at least 24 hours in advance of the start of your workshop. Reservation cancellation can be done through the confirmation email you initially received upon booking your spots for the workshop, after cancelling your reservations, give us a call and we will be able to refund you the amount that you paid for your initial payments. There are no refunds for late cancellations, tardiness, or "no shows".

Please give us a call to let us know when you expect to arrive; If we do not hear from you we will assume you aren't coming and we may give your spot to a walk-in. If you are not present when the instruction portion of the workshop has begun we cannot start over for you. Missed appointments are not eligible for a refund but we will work with you to try and reschedule your reservations, or you can put your initial payment towards a kit-to-go.

Yes, fill out this form to inquire about booking a private broom making, bookbinding, spelljar, or open crafting workshop. If you would like to book a private workshop but have fewer than 10 people in your party, you will still be required to pay for 10 spots in the workshop. (Please note that we cannot guarantee we will have the availability in our schedule to add private workshops).

We are primarily a crafting space. However, our retail shop at 86 Wharf St. is usually open from 11:00am - 5:00pm Tuesday through Sunday. (OCTOBER: we reserve the right to close our retail shop at any time so that our workshops can run smoothly).

All broom making, bookbinding, and spelljar workshops are ages 13+ (no exceptions). However, you can always purchase a kit-to-go and help your child make their craft at home. Please also consider booking a private workshop or a Private Open Crafting Party which is not limited to ages 13+ (must book for a group of 10 or more for private parties).

No, our workshop space is open only to those who are participating in the workshop. If your group requires more flexibility in class size for observers/supervisors/troop leaders/parents, consider inquiring about a private workshop. If someone in your party requires additional assistance due to a disability please contact us prior to your workshop and we will work with you to figure out necessary accommodations.

No, everybody participating in a broom making, bookbinding, or spelljar workshop must be working on their own craft.

After reserving your spot(s) in a workshop you should receive an email with confirmation of your booking as well as the date, time, and location of your workshop. All times are in EST (Eastern Standard Time) but receipts may say otherwise! If you have not received this email please give us a call and we can help you figure out what went wrong.
